1. Introduction and goals

SID Rovinj Workshop is our high-powered creative design week, reaching its 15th edition in 2012.
The workshop aims, within 1 week, to generate new ideas on a theme assigned by the client company using the SID creative method.

2. Why businesses participate in the Rovinj Workshop by assigning design themes

  • The possibility to gain access to “unconditioned creativity”
students face these assigned themes without the conditioning created by months or years of specific design experience. In this way, the cultural approach to the project is much more free and often creates ideas and products which are particularly innovative.
  • Access to an elevated number of “creative ideas”
with the coordination of teachers, all 25 students develop and present on average at least two creative ideas on the assigned theme.
  • The reading of the theme from a “youthful angle”
due to the cultural context in which they are being formed (computerization, globalization, contamination of diverse cultures) creative young men and women have a different lifestyle from that of adult designers. This lifestyle often involves situations, behaviors and experiences that necessitate new products which were not demanded in previous generations; the vision of young designers is important insomuch as it projects out from the cultural foundation of the new generations and these new generations are the primary consumer targets of today.
  • The possibility to select young designers
should they require it, contact with a significant number of young designers allows companies to select new professional figures with greater attention that they can insert into their own organizations or with whom they can create collaborative relationships in outsourcing.
  • A stimulating experience for the employees of the company involved in the workshop
During the week of work, the staff of the company participates actively and in loco in the workshop and can check up every step of the birth of new ideas.

3. The workshop

A few simple ingredients needed for a successful SID Rovinj Workshop:

THE CREATIVE METHOD

Developing of design conceptsAll of the procedures that Scuola Italiana Design has fine tuned over the years are steadily updated through contributions from its creative, international community as well as the constant application of these contributions “in the field.”

TUTORSHIP

The workshop is led by Scuola Italiana Design teachers who, through their years of direct, educational experience, are well-trained in the application of creative methods in intimate workgroups.

THE PARTICIPANTS

40 people: students from our institute or from other industrial design institutes and young designers interested in deepening their knowledge in methodologies for a creative approach in design.

THE CLIENTS

Due to the pragmatism that characterizes our field we never deal with theoretical arguments. Instead, we choose companies which are leaders in their markets to assign the concept design themes to be followed in our working week of “full immersion.”
Up to now we have teamed with: Città di Rovigno, Rollerblade, Alfa Romeo, Fila Footwear, Whirlpool, Firme di Vetro, Chicco-Artsana, Fischer, Valigeria Roncato, Ferrero, Plastica Sandri, InoxVeneta, FAG Arti Grafiche, Mondo.

4. The Book of Ideas

At the end of the workshop the company will receive a book containing all the creative ideas born in reply to the assigned theme.

5. Location and language

Rovinj, CroatiaSID Rovinj Workshop lasts one week and takes place every June in Rovinj (Croatia).
Choosing the location actually played a strategic role in the project’s success!
After a long search we have chosen Rovinj, a true cradle of creativity.
Rovinj, with its Venetian origins, located on the Istrian coast of Croatia is the perfect spot; it entices us with fresh, unfamiliar atmospheres, with rhythms and unusual settings impossible to reproduce in a normal working week.
For an entire week cars will be forgotten; we move around on foot, by bike or by boat. We work and enjoy ourselves, without formalities, often in our swimsuits at the side of the pool or on the rocks that jut out over an uncontaminated sea, or strolling through a natural park that reminds us of the serenity of Viennese forests.

Italian and English are the official languages.
