Transformative scales of the Fragment - SID

Contemporary Dolomites

Dolomiti Contemporanee is a project founded in 2011 that uses contemporary art and culture to reactivate abandoned spaces in the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a critical and experimental approach, it transforms abandoned industrial sites into temporary centers of cultural production through art residencies, exhibitions and collaborations with public and private entities.

The goal is to enhance the unexpressed potential of the area, generating new visions and uses for marginal and historically significant places.

The Brief

The project was created in response to a recent act of vandalism against the former Eni Village Colony in Borca di Cadore. The destructive action left behind fragments and compromised objects, which now become the starting point for a path of valorization and creative transformation.

The first phase took place on May 7, 2025, with a selective collection of discarded materials within the Colony. Students from SID – Scuola Italiana Design analyzed these objects by observing their structure, materials, movement systems and expressive potential.

Starting with these elements, a design process will begin and continue on May 22 on San Servolo Island, where the first ideas, sketches and prototypes will take shape.

The ultimate goal? To give new life to these objects by transforming them into significant elements of the new Boulder Capsule under construction at Borca, a project developed in collaboration with Federlegno.

Discarded objects thus become active modules of meaning, triggering a reflection on reuse, memory and the ability of design to generate new possibilities from ruin.

Concept - Capsule

A Capsule then, what is it?

Not a closed envelope, rather a permeable membrane, an airborne or liquid connective, a

Space that creates the networks, the relationships, thematic and functional, between the elements involved.

A container, also, of functions, of instances.

Not a coating, but a capacious eleboration of content.

We refer to the botanical meaning of Capsule, where it is seed, ovary, capable of carrying with

Self parts of flowers, viscera, idea.

Even better: we need Space Capsules and Time Capsules, to deal with mountains, and before that with culture, through the projective maneuvers of the exploratory man, and this applies to the designer, the architect, the astronaut, the climber, the philosopher. All of them dig, search, explore, and build tools, technological and plastic, that synthesize, and encapsulate, and manifest, the parts of the search, redesigning contexts, landscapes, and objects within them.
