Pandemic Design Mask - SID

Brief

The request is to design a product that can fit into people’s lives at the time of the Corona virus, improving it and helping to cope with the ongoing pandemic. This will also need to be innovative, simple, direct and communicative.

The product can be a device for hygiene and safety, a device for social distancing, an object designed for lockdown or smartworking, and must fit into one of the following scenarios: home, public premises, health, business, or personal.

Project

One of the problems that are encountered by doctors is pain behind the ears caused by the elastic bands of the mask, which is held for the duration of the shift, which can be very long.

The product aims to solve this problem by exploiting the headset, which physicians are obliged to wear, as a support for the mask, thus eliminating elastic bands and not putting pressure on the ears. In addition, the headset and mask, being designed together, are consistent making these protective devices more visually pleasing. In fact, the product is intended to move away from hospital aesthetics and be something that makes patients, especially younger patients, more comfortable. Indeed, it is important to remember that these devices are also mandatory in pediatric wards and can intimidate the child and prevent the doctor from establishing a trusting relationship. For this reason, a light blue faux denim fabric with an orange border was chosen, which together result in a more vibrant color combination than the typical light blues or greens usually found in hospitals. The product is designed especially for dental offices and outpatient clinics that are required to wear these protective devices while not having to be equipped as in hospitals.

The two parts, headset and facemask, are both made of fabric and are designed as a single object, and the concept of motorcycle helmets with a removable chin strap has been taken up to give the product continuity of form. The headset fastens with ribbons at the back of the head, and then the facemask is attached via Velcro to the two bands that cover the ears, so that it stays snug against the face. The facemask was made by taking the regulatory FPP2 facemasks as a model and then slightly modified its lines so that it would better complement the headset.
