Examinations and teaching - SID

Structure of the training course

The three-year pathway in Design offered by SID is organized on a semester basis and provides a balanced combination of:

  • Frontal lectures
  • Design workshops
  • Thematic workshops
  • Interdisciplinary activities
  • Midterm and final verifications

Each academic year is divided into two semesters, with assessments at the end of each term. Class hours and subjects are distributed to ensure a sustainable and progressive teaching load.

Teaching methods

Teaching is based on an experiential and applied approach, integrating theory, practice and direct confrontation with the professional world. Classes are taught by faculty and professionals active in the field, and include:

  • Team projects
  • Real case studies
  • Collaborations with companies
  • Extra-curricular activities (camps, exhibitions, events)

All educational activities are described in the General Educational Regulations, which define objectives, methods and evaluation criteria.

Attendance and training requirements

Attendance is mandatory for all teaching activities in the curriculum. The student must attend at least 75% of the total hours for each teaching in order to be eligible for the final exams.

Reasoned absences are allowed within the limits stipulated in the regulations. If the allowed thresholds are exceeded, the student must repeat the teaching in the following year.

Examinations and evaluations

Each teaching involves a final assessment, which may include:

  • Written and oral examinations
  • Design deliveries
  • Public presentations
  • Individual or group reports

Grades are given in thirtieths, with possible honors for excellent results. At least 18/30 is required to pass an exam.

Three examination sessions are scheduled each year:

  • Winter (February)
  • Summer (June)
  • Autumn (September)

Retrievals and waivers

In case of failure to pass the examination, the student is entitled to appear for the subsequent appeals in the same session. It is possible to waive an examination already taken only on the terms and in the manner specified in the regulations.

Passing all exams is a necessary condition for admission to the final graduation examination.

Thesis and diploma

The final exam is a pivotal moment of the educational journey at SID: it represents an opportunity for each student to independently express his or her design identity, the critical maturity he or she has achieved, and the ability to approach a complex topic with vision and method.

How the thesis is done
The thesis consists of the development of a project, the result of applied research, accompanied by a descriptive paper. The work is done individually or in pairs, and is discussed publicly before a Diploma Committee.

What the student must do

The pathway has several stages:

  • Request and Assignment of Speaker: The student proposes a project topic and a faculty speaker.
  • Project development: The student works independently, regularly engaging with their lecturer during dedicated meetings. The project must be consistent with the content of the curriculum and develop a theme relevant to contemporary design.
  • Thesis preparation and delivery: the student submits the project paper, explanatory report, a summary presentation for discussion. It is also necessary to complete and submit the thesis application, according to the instructions provided by the Secretariat.
  • Final Discussion: The discussion takes place in public session before the Commission, which evaluates the quality of the project, methodological consistency, expository and argumentative ability, originality and innovative value of the work.
  • Assignment of grade: The thesis grade contributes to the weighted average of the examinations and contributes to the final graduation grade, expressed in one hundredth of a second with honors if applicable.

Theses delivered are archived and made searchable, in compliance with privacy and intellectual property regulations.

The diploma awarded is a First Level Academic Degree, legally recognized within the AFAM system.
